As famous as the Tirunelveli is for halwa, so is the sevu prepared in Sattur. The Sattur Sevu is a great traditional snack that is now available online! Sattur is the native for ever tasty world famous snack "Kara Sevu" which is a good combination with tea and even as a side dish for food. The spicy snack is very common in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu but is indigenous to Sattur. The Sattur Sevu is a close cousin of the bhujiya, a thicker version though.Unlike in other places where channa dal (besan) is the main ingredient to make kara sevu dough, here rice flour is mixed with channa dal. A century ago, Shanmuga Nadar started by selling a variety of snack items but found people returning for the sevu (locally pronounced as chevu). In no time it became Sattur’s calling card. To this day, Shanmuga Nadar Shop is much sort after for their kara sevu. The speciality of this kara sevu is that garlic bought from Periyakulam and kadalai paruppu from Madurai are used.The sevu is made with home-ground spices.
